3.10Captions and credit
Add titles, captions and credit, correct capture metadata, and exchange metadata with XMP sidecars on Mac.
Select one photograph and press I. Under METADATA, use Description for title, caption, keywords and per-photograph creator and copyright. Press ⏎ or click elsewhere to save text. Caption words remain searchable on Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.
Capture. Correct the lens, choose a local capture date and time, then click Save capture time. Enter an optional UTC offset, such as +02:00. Recorded values stay visible; Restore removes the correction. Corrections change export metadata and export frame readings, including filenames that use the capture date. Browse ordering continues to use the recorded date. Originals and Photos metadata remain unchanged.
XMP sidecars. For a connected folder photograph, the .xmp filename and status appear above the tabs. Choose Sync → Read XMP to bring metadata into Frames, or Write XMP to create or update the sidecar beside the original. Title, caption, keywords, rating, credit and capture corrections are exchanged. Independent changes merge; if both sides changed the same field, choose Frames or Sidecar before applying. A sidecar changed after review must be read again. Other applications’ properties, including development settings and translated text, are preserved. Manual Read/Write remains available. Opt-in automatic exchange and treatment sidecars are described in Portable treatments and catalogues.
Credit defaults. Settings › General supplies creator and copyright when the per-photograph fields are empty. {date:yyyy} inserts the capture year into the shared copyright setting during export. Shared settings live outside the catalogue; photograph-specific edits are included in catalogue backups and follow Library Sync. Sidecar files and their local review history do not travel through device sync.
Exports. Catalogue keywords and captions replace the corresponding original fields. Title and capture corrections are applied to rendered exports. Turning Copyright off removes creator and copyright; turning Capture date or Camera information off also withholds the corresponding corrections. Captions and keywords remain eligible for export.
The new editor and XMP actions are available on Mac. iPhone and iPad retain their caption and keyword editors; other devices apply synced metadata to exports. Photos photographs support catalogue edits and exports, without XMP writes into the Photos library. Apple Reference Image and Content Credentials are not part of this first version.
